301 not as much fun as the 501!

Pros: they have an 8 ft cable
Cons: the rest of the headphone

The AKG 301 is a circumaural open headphone. They are kind of big and weird looking. Comfort is ok but not the best. My ears touch inside of the chamber which can be annoying. The pads are pleather and can be removed and cleaned/changed easily. This is good because all the conditions are right for a good sweat - it is currently winter here so I cannot verify this but I'll bet... lots of sweat in the summer with these pads. They are 100 ohms with a frequency response of 20-25KHz. A single sided cable attached at the left ear piece is 8 ft. long.
OK, I've stalled enough on how they sound. Where is the bass? And why do the highs sound unfocused, even a bit honky. The midrange is not very good either - recessed. At $149 I have to say they are way over priced. Grado and Sennheiser both make superior headphones in this price range. Disappointing to say the least. Their big brother the 501 is quite a bit better and worth the extra bucks!
I would have to recommend skipping this headphone if you are currently searching for something in this price range. They are not horrible but they are not good either. Mired in mediocrity they are!
401 reasons to like AKG

Having previously reviewed the K501 and K301 I was curious to see how these 3 related. I found the K501 to be a real fine headphone and the K301 to fall far short of the expectations I had for them. So I really didn't know what to expect...
Much to my delight the K401 was much closer to the 501. The musicality was there as well as a more realistic reproduction of sound. Though the K401 still is colored and not a measuring stick for accuracy and tonal balance it is still nontheless a very pleasant listen. It leans toward the dark side - the bass is a little forward and the highs/vocals recessed. I could really like my rock discs through these. Most are rather bright and these would tone down the harshness while delivering the bass necessary to convince my brain that a live performance was indeed taking place. Though the highs are recessed they are clean and clear - good detail.
AKG rates their freq. response at 18-28K. Impedance is 120 ohms. I found that I could not get enough volume out of my portable cd player (Panasonic SL-CT470) to make them work well but the addition of a headphone amp (Total Airhead) got the most out of them. A single sided (left ear piece)cable is convenient and is terminated to a mini with a 1/4" adapter supplied. They are circumaural with cloth covered pads (like the K501). Comfort is good. The headband is self adjusting. Overall build quality is very good. My only concern is the cable and its connection to the ear piece. They offer very little isolation - they are an open design. They also leak a fair amount of sound into the local environment.
Is is 501 time already!!!

The AKG 501 is one of my favorite mid priced headphones. At 120 ohms they are easy to drive. They come with a 8 ft. single sided (left ear)cable terminated to a stereo mini plug with a 1/4" adapter supplied. They are open, providing no isolation from outside noise. They are comfortable but a little bulky. Strong and sturdy, these should hold up under normal use for a lifetime.
They deliver a smooth, laid back sound. Good detail, nice mids and decent bass. Nothing flashy but a nice, non fatiguing sound. Separation of instruments is good. Accurately reproduces the signal put into it. If it has a fault it is that it lacks liveliness. Not much punch... Good balance from top to bottom.
In a quiet environment these are great. Not recommended for listening in noisy places - no isolation.
A relaxing listen, these are a good headphone for classical, jazz, and pop. Bypass them if you like metal or techno. |
