ETYMOTIC: The problem of cord noise is a tough one to solve. It is not actually a problem with either the cable or the earphones, but rather an unfortunate side effect of the way the design comes together. The cord noise you hear is a mechanical transfer (a vibration) that is more noticeable due to the insert earphone design. If we put our ER-4P cord on a pair of standard headphones or earbuds there would be no significant cord noise because the headphone or earbud makes very little contact with the ear and those type of earphones are nonoccluding (no seal in the ear canal). Due to the insert earphone/sealing design of our earphones there is more direct contact with ear so the cord noise is more noticeable. So, since there is not a fundamental problem with the cord, there is not easy solution. If we were to change the design of the earphones so that they make less contact
with the ear canal you would loose the superior sound isolation they provide. The reason our earphones are superior in sound isolation and sound quality to all other noise canceling earphones is due to the insert earphone design, so we will never change that. We continue to search for better cord options, but there is nothing new on the horizon.
There are some things an ER-4 wearer can do to reduce the cord noise. First, always use the included shirt clip. Second, bring the cords from the earphones over the top and down the back of the ears. By doing this the cord will make contact with the skin of the outer ear and the transfer of the vibration will be stopped before reaching the ear canal.
At this time, Etymotic does not have any design changes in the immediate 6 month future
